The qualifications for marriage are not explicitly defined in the Bible in terms of specific criteria for individuals. However, the Bible provides principles and guidelines for marriage that can be helpful in understanding the qualities and attitudes that are important for a successful and God honoring marriage.
Qualifications for marriage
- Love God and accept Jesus as your personal Lord and saviour.
- Be family oriented and have high regard for the family institution
- Commitment: Marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. Jesus reaffirmed this in Matthew 19:6, saying, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” A willingness to commit to a lifelong partnership is an essential aspect of marriage.
- Love and Selflessness: The Bible teaches that husbands and wives are called to love and serve one another. Ephesians 5:25 states, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Selfless love, sacrificial care, and putting the needs of your spouse before your own are important qualities in a marriage relationship.
- Faithfulness and Fidelity: Marriage is built on trust and faithfulness. Hebrews 13:4 states, “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled.” Faithfulness to one’s spouse and the commitment to remain loyal and true to the marriage covenant is crucial.
- Compatibility: While the Bible doesn’t provide an exhaustive list of specific criteria for compatibility, it encourages believers to be yoked together with someone who shares their faith and values. 2 Corinthians 6:14 advises, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” Having shared beliefs, values, and goals can contribute to a stronger foundation for a marriage relationship.
- Emotional and Spiritual Support: Marriage involves supporting and encouraging one another emotionally and spiritually. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 states, “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!” A strong marital bond is built on mutual support and encouragement.
It’s important to note that while these principles provide guidance, everyone’s
journey and circumstances are unique. Seeking wisdom and counsel from trusted
mentors, pastors, or Christian marriage resources can be beneficial in discerning
one’s readiness for marriage.
