The concepts of love and submission in marriage are discussed in the Bible, particularly in the context of Christian marriages. Ephesians 5:22-33 (NIV) provides guidance on both of these aspects.
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body.
“For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
In this passage, the Bible emphasizes the following:
Submission (Wives):
- Wives are encouraged to submit to their husbands “as to the Lord.”
- The analogy is drawn between the husband’s role in the marriage and Christ’s role as the head of the church.
- Submission is framed in the context of mutual love and respect within the marriage.
Love (Husbands):
- Husbands are instructed to love their wives sacrificially, just as Christ loved the church.
- This love should be selfless and involve caring for one’s wife as one’s own body.
- The husband’s role is to nourish and cherish his wife, striving for her holiness and well-being.
It’s important to note that these teachings are often interpreted within the context of mutual submission and mutual love. While the wife is encouraged to submit to her husband’s leadership, the husband is called to love his wife selflessly. This mutual submission and love create a balanced and harmonious partnership within the marriage.
Different Christian denominations and individual couples may interpret and apply these teachings in various ways. In contemporary Christian marriages, the emphasis is often on mutual respect, mutual support, and shared decision-making within the context of love and submission as described in Ephesians 5
